Paths of Faith

Paths of Faith is an exhibition route and temporary exhibition presented across two cultural venues belonging to Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa. It explores faith, love and death as central dimensions of the human experience. Through 28 works from different periods, geographical contexts and artistic traditions, drawn from the collections of the Museum of São Roque and Casa Ásia – Francisco Capelo Collection, it offers a reflection on the sacred and the profane, the body and transcendence, through a dialogue between physical, social, symbolic and spiritual dimensions.

The temporary exhibition Oblivion forms an integral part of the route. Created by Mafalda Oliveira Martins and displayed at the Museum of São Roque, Oblivion pays tribute to the 233 people who died alone in Lisbon in 2021, without relatives or friends to claim their bodies. Inspired by a ceremony held in Church of São Roque, the exhibition seeks to preserve the memory of those for whom only their names remained. Through imagined faces created using simple materials, it invites visitors to reflect on loneliness, human dignity and the importance of remembering those who passed away without leaving a visible memory behind.
