The Child Jesus of the Troubled Ones: A Devotion Among Women in the Lisbon of King João VI
Until 30 august
In 1817, in a Lisbon still recovering from the French invasions, an orphan from the Recolhimento da Rua da Rosa was cured of her paralysis; this was attributed to a painting at the Trinas do Mocambo convent depicting the Child Jesus, known as “the Child Jesus of the Troubled Ones”.
The miracle was witnessed by several people, including the doctor who was treating her, and became widely known.
This devotion appears to have been mainly practiced by women, popular, and to have been limited to the first half of the 19th century, when political and social times were, in fact, “troubled.”
In addition to prayer cards and amulets, the original painting was also adapted into full-size sculptures for use in private chapels, similar to the piece donated to the Museum of São Roque in 2009, which inspired this exhibition.
