Museu de São Roque – Santa Casa da Misericórdia de LisboaIn the year marking the 20th anniversary of the transfer of power in Macao, the 40th anniversary of the establishment of political and diplomatic relations between Portugal and the People’s Republic of China, and the 450th anniversary of the founding of Santa Casa da Misericórdia of Macao, the Museum of São Roque is organising this exhibition.
Designed with the aim of showing Luso-Chinese relations in their global dimension, it focuses on the first half of the 18th century, one of the most intense and relevant periods of the relationship between Portugal and Europe, and China. Largely coinciding with the long reign of King John V (r. 1706-1750) in Portugal and three reigns of Chinese emperors of the Qing dynasty – Kangxi (1662-1722), Yongzheng (1723-1735) and Qianlong (1736-1795) – this moment is addressed here through the exhibition of over 50 pieces. Living products of European and Asian societies, cultures, states, cities, economies, markets and religions, these objects aim to illustrate how the rapprochement and, so often, the conflict between the two kingdoms took place. They are organised into four nuclei, which correspond to four physical spaces in the Temporary Exhibitions Gallery of the Museum of São Roque.
