Chapels of the Holy Martyrs and the Holy Virgins
The set of reliquaries displayed in the side altars of the Chancel deserve special attention not only for their historical and artistic value, but also for their close connection to the popular spirituality encouraged by the Society of Jesus.
A large part of them were collected by João de Borja (1533-1606), son of the Jesuit St. Francis Borgia (1510-1572), while he was ambassador of Philip II of Spain (1527-1598) in Prague, at the imperial court of Rudolf II (1552-1612). These sets were only rediscovered in the 19th century and, until then, they remained protected and covered by canvases and were only displayed on important liturgical occasions.
