Chapel of the Annunciation
This altar was built at the request of António de Castro, son of João de Castro who, in his will, expressed his wish to have his tomb and that of his master, the Jesuit priest Francisco Suarez, an eminent professor of Theology and Law at the University of Coimbra, who died in the old Professed House of São Roque in 1617, built in that chapel.
At the centre of the altar, there is a painting depicting the “Annunciation of the Angel to the Virgin Mary”, attributed to the painter Gaspar Dias (ca.1515-ca.1591), from around 1580, which was placed here by the architect António César Mena Júnior at the end of the 19th century.
