Chapel of St. Roch
It was built on the site where the head of the primitive shrine of São Roque would have been located, prior to the present-day church.
The tile panels lining the walls with scenes from the life of St. Roch are a rare surviving example of the singular and exquisite Portuguese Mannerist tile production of the late 16th century. From the same period is the painting on the left side, representing the “Apparition of the Angel to St. Roch”, executed by Gaspar Dias (ca.1515-ca.1591) and one of the best works of this highly regarded Portuguese Mannerist painter.
