Chapel of St. John the Baptist

Commissioned by King John V (1689-1750) to the Roman architects Luigi Vanvitelli (1700-1773) and Nicola Salvi (1699-1751) in 1742 and built in Rome, from where it was sent to Lisbon and built on the site of the old chapel of the Holy Spirit (capela do Espírito Santo).

The chapel is made up of gilded bronze elements, wood and ivory inlays and various noble stone materials. Three figurative panels in mosaic, also used on the floor, and another three in relief complete the decorative programme, as well as sculptural figures in marble, located at the top of the altarpiece, the ceiling and over the archway into the chapel, topped by the Royal Portuguese Coat of Arms amidst angels.
