Chapel of St. Francis Xavier
Founded in 1634, its decoration dates back to the first half of the 17th century. At the centre of the altar, a 17th century sculpture of the Jesuit missionary St. Francis Xavier stands out.
The side paintings, attributed to the Portuguese painter José de Avelar Rebelo (c. 1600-1657), depict, on the left side, “King John III in audience to St. Francis Xavier”, when he left for India, and, on the right side, “Pope Paul III in the act of sending the first Priests of the Society of Jesus to Portugal”.
