Chapel of St. Anthony
Instituted by Pedro Machado de Brito, who bequeathed it to the Society of Jesus.
It was partially destroyed by the 1755 earthquake, of which original altarpiece only the Mannerist columns remain, and was later redecorated with elements of the late Baroque. The side walls are lined with wooden panels, imitating marble, followed by diamond-topped tiles and 18th-century paintings depicting the life of St. Anthony, framed by gilded woodcarvings and cherubs, of which the largest, by the painter Vieira Lusitano (1699-1783), stands out.
