Part of the iconographic programme of the Society of Jesus, this work bears witness to the importance given to the cult of the Virgin and the martyrs and its close connection to the cult of relics.
It is dominated by the figure of the crowned Virgin - holding in her right hand the lily of purity and, in her left, the palm of martyrdom - surrounded by two groups: the first, of saints partially identified by their attributes, such as Catherine, Apollonia, Agatha and Lucy in the foreground, and the second, of angel musicians.
This painting is part of a set of four paired paintings belonging to the Church of São Roque, originally located on the altars of the Holy Martyrs and the Holy Virgins on the side of the main chapel, where the precious collection of reliquaries, only visible in occasional celebrations, is kept. Although they constitute a whole, the large rectangular paintings date from the end of the 16th century (Inv. Pin. 217) and the semi-circular ones, which complete them, from the end of the following century (Inv. 197 and 198).
