This painting reveals variations on the traditional iconography of the Annunciation that indicate an interpretation oriented towards promoting the education of orphans.
This seems to suggest the group of children holding the mantle of the Archangel Gabriel, as well as the presence of a small painting, on the throne, representing the Good Samaritan, an allegory of social assistance.
It probably integrated a small altarpiece or oratory of a teaching institution oriented towards the education of abandoned children. This was a social concern that preceded and prompted the creation of the Misericórdias.
